Diana Chapman made history in Linden on Saturday evening, becoming only the second female artist to win the Guyana Soca Monarch competition. Her winning performance, “My Home,” a tribute to Guyana, earned her the title among a field of fifteen competitors, marking the end of a 16-year gap since the last female victory in the competition.
The competition, a key event in Guyana’s Mashramani calendar, saw OKC securing second place, while Omaiah Hall claimed third position. Seasoned performers Vintayge and Chavez shared fourth place after their performances.
This year’s event carried special significance as it returned to Linden, the birthplace of Mashramani celebrations. The mining town welcomed visitors from across Guyana who gathered to witness the performances, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the evening.
The competition sparked engagement on social media, particularly regarding the crowd’s enthusiastic response to performances by OKC and Omaiah Hall. However, the judges’ decision stood firm, recognizing Chapman’s patriotic tribute to Guyana as the winning performance.
From party anthems to national tributes, the performers showcased the range of contemporary soca music in Guyana. Each artist brought their interpretation to the stage, contributing to an evening that highlighted the genre’s growth and diversity within the country.
As a central feature of Mashramani celebrations, the Soca Monarch competition continues to serve as a platform for Guyanese musical talent. The event’s return to Linden connected this year’s competition to its historical roots while moving forward with a new chapter in its story, as performers and patrons came together to celebrate Guyanese music and culture.
