Fresh off her Road March triumph, Guyana’s “soca princess” Omaiah Hall just flipped the script on typical artist promotions with a first-of-its-kind karaoke competition centered entirely around her hit song “Breakway” – and SoHo was PACKED!
Tuesday night at SoHo usually means karaoke, but when Omaiah announced her “Breakway” competition, the venue saw a crowd unlike anything they’d experienced for a Tuesday night. Turns out everyone wanted a shot at belting out the Road March winner for some seriously sweet prizes!
“The support was tremendous,” Omaiah admitted, clearly blown away by the turnout. “I didn’t expect so many people to come out to the event.”
She explained her vision was two-fold – she’s a karaoke enthusiast herself, and she wanted to create a unique way to give back to fans who’ve been riding with her through the entire competition season.
After a competitive evening of performances, Scipio emerged as the first-place winner, taking home $300 US, a photoshoot from Michael Bonds Photography, two tickets to General Stinging Nettles, a pedicure package from Everything Nails 592, and makeup services from Artistry by Amber. Teanna secured second place, while Sophia rounded out the winners in third position, with both receiving impressive prize packages including accommodations, event tickets, and specialized services.
But here’s the kicker, participants quickly discovered that “Breakway” is actually INSANELY difficult to perform! What looked like a fun night out turned into a vocal obstacle course that had competitors gaining a whole new appreciation for Omaiah’s vocal prowess.
The consensus across the participants is that the song is a really difficult one. This brought even greater respect to Omaiah for having the ability to deliver such a difficult song.
For the young artist, this is just the beginning. She plans to continue hosting similar events with future releases, creating a unique platform where fans can engage with her music while potentially winning prizes. It’s a brilliant marketing strategy disguised as a party, getting people to learn her lyrics while building community among supporters.
From third place in Soca Monarch to Road March champion to karaoke innovator – Omaiah Hall is clearly determined to make the entire Caribbean (and beyond) know her name, one creative move at a time!
