GET TO KNOW || DESTINY ETIENNE

Miss Guyana Culture Queen 2025 - Contestant #4

Destiny Etienne’s love affair with her hometown runs deep. Growing up in Linden, she experienced something increasingly rare in today’s world, a true community where everyone knows everyone, and where, as she puts it, “I truly had a village raising me.”

Those formative years were spent hiking sand hills and trekking through trees, completely immersed in nature. “Those moments grounded me,” Destiny recalls. “Nature is where I reset.” It’s a connection that remains vital to her today, especially as her career has taken her away from Linden more frequently, leaving her longing for that peaceful reconnection with the outdoors.

While Destiny speaks warmly of her community, she’s more reserved about her family background. What she will share is that her family life taught her resilience, a quiet strength that she says now fuels her ambition, empathy, and belief in creating a better future. It’s the kind of foundation that doesn’t make headlines but creates the steady determination that carries someone through life’s bigger challenges.

That resilience would prove essential as Destiny pursued her education in Civil and Environmental Engineering, eventually earning her bachelor’s degree and building a career in the energy industry. But for her, engineering was never just about systems and structures, it was about people.

“My education helped me to see that behind every design and every system, are people, and that thoughtful solutions can truly change lives,” she explains. It also gave her confidence to use her voice in spaces where women are often underrepresented, learning to lead with both strength and empathy.

Ask Destiny about Guyanese culture, and her eyes light up when she talks about food. For her, cooking isn’t just about sustenance, it’s about connection, heritage, and storytelling. “Food brings people together, and in Guyana, it’s a beautiful blend of cultural heritage,” she says. “I love exploring new dishes, learning about their origins, and sharing meals that tell stories of who we are and where we came from.”

This passion for food connects directly to how she practices her cultural heritage, through cooking traditional meals, learning new ones, and sharing these experiences with others. It’s also reflected in a simple but meaningful family tradition: starting every new year with food in the house, a symbol of abundance and preparedness that she plans to carry forward always.

When the Miss Guyana Culture Queen 2025 pageant called, Destiny saw more than just a competition. “I saw it as a platform to celebrate my identity, represent my community, and use my voice to uplift others,” she explains. The opportunity to merge pageantry, culture, and empowerment resonated deeply with her values and aspirations.

Learning she’d made it as a finalist brought excitement rather than surprise. “I knew the road ahead would take hard work and growth, and I welcomed it with open arms,” she says. For Destiny, representing Linden on this platform is both an honour and a responsibility, a chance to shine a light on her community’s beauty and strength.

The pageant experience has already delivered growth and unexpected connections. She’s met incredible people, fellow contestants, mentors, and organizers, who have all added something special to her journey. While she admits to feeling nervous about those tense moments right before stepping on stage, she’s learned to channel that energy into power and presence.

If crowned Miss Guyana Culture Queen, she plans to focus on promoting cultural understanding, especially among young people, and highlighting how shared experiences can bring communities together. She’s also interested in exploring how showcasing Guyana’s cultural diversity can support tourism and help more people appreciate what makes the country unique.

Her vision for change is refreshingly practical: creating more spaces, both physical and social, where people from different backgrounds can come together and learn from one another. “I believe small, everyday connections can help us learn more about our culture and make us more united and proud as Guyanese,” she says.

The fact that Guyana has won the Miss Caribbean Culture Queen title for two consecutive years doesn’t pressure Destiny, it inspires her. “It shows that Guyanese women are powerful, poised and purposeful,” she says. She sees it not as pressure but as a proud responsibility to uphold that legacy with grace and determination.

The prospect of potentially representing Guyana on the regional stage fills her with honour. “I’d carry our culture, our people, and our heritage with pride,” she says. “It’s not just about showcasing a dress or a title, it’s about showing everyone who Guyanese are and what we stand for.”

Even her competition number holds meaning for her. Being contestant #4 puts her “right in the center,” which she finds symbolic—balanced, grounded, and exactly where she needs to be.

As coronation night approaches, Destiny is most looking forward to the energy in the room, “that mix of nerves, excitement and pride” when everything they’ve worked for comes together. Her message to Guyana before the competition is simple but powerful: “No matter where you come from or what path you’re on, you deserve to take up space. Growth happens in showing up and that’s where confidence is built.”

Regardless of the outcome, Destiny wants to be remembered as someone who goes after what she’s passionate about, even when it’s unfamiliar. “Life is short and I don’t believe in letting fear make decisions for me,” she says. “I hope that inspires others to try, to take chances, and to trust that they’re capable too.”

From the sand hills of Linden to the Miss Guyana Culture Queen stage, Destiny Etienne’s journey embodies the motto she holds dear: “One People, One Nation, One Destiny.” For her, it’s about recognizing shared identity, celebrating differences, and working together to build a future where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered.
