Making home workouts work with Dr. Alana Ernest

If you have exhausted all the possibilities of attending a gym, do not be discouraged. Home workouts are as effective.

I usually get this explosion of excitement when I see people succeed. For those I know personally, I wish I could be at every graduation, every award ceremony, every wedding, and events of any sort of recognition. I must shout and scream for you. You can imagine what happens when it’s a family member. As I prepared for this blog post, I read of all the achievements of Alana Langhorn nee Ernest and I thought of how our grandmother, Florita Isidore, and her dad, Lambert Ernest, must be smiling in heaven. I know you are here to read about making your home workouts work, but I grant myself a few lines to express how proud I am of each and everyone around me. Today, I am happy to feature my cousin, Dr. Alana Ernest.

Hailing from the mining town of Mahdia, Region 8, Alana has always been an exemplary young woman. She developed a passion for fitness from a young age by observing her mother, Justina. “I always remember seeing my mom exercising everyday,” said the Miss Guyana Universe 2006 Queen.

Alana admitted that there were periods of inconsistency but after entering into the modelling arena, she finally took fitness more seriously. I can recall Alana talking about the number of crunches she does daily to maintain her visible rock abs. That was probably around 2005-2006. Today, Alana continues to exercise daily at home even with a busy schedule as District Medical Officer (acting), coupled with being a mom. She makes home workouts work.

“I work out at home, mostly because I can better decide what time suits me,” said Alana.

Her motivation comes from the way she feels after exercising, which is an excellent example of being intrinsically motivated. “I get better sleep at night, I am more energetic and active during the day, happier, and most of all I feel healthy,” the doctor expressed, adding that fitness has also done so much for her mentally that others recognise her vibrancy.

The hardest part of fitness is to start; thus, Alana advised that we begin with a little, and make it a practice until it becomes routine that we cannot live without.

One of Alana’s favourite quotes says, “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going”

I recall working out with Alana a few times and I must say the girl is a beast. In a good way. I admire her amazing results achieved from working out only at home along with her ability to maintain this lifestyle without a personal trainer. According to Alana, she follows exercise videos from youtube. “I think the need for a personal trainer depends on how disciplined you are,” Alana posited.

Alana also suggested that you make your workouts fun. Most of us like to dance. Why not try zumba or dancersize?

“It might be hard but the only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen” – Alana Ernest-Langhorne.

If you are considering exercising at home, please let me remind you that home is a good place to start as it helps you to become disciplined. Like Alana, you too can achieve your fitness goals in the comfort of your home.
