Advice from SHE-E-O: “Embracing your natural hair makes you see how each person is unique. Embrace your roots, it’s growing from your head so rock it! Why would you rather have it any other way? Boss up and show off your natural hair, that’s part of you, so rock it and don’t care about what people say.
In a society where more and more women are opting to boycott the ‘creamy crack’ and embrace their natural textures, there is a growing market for natural hair businesses.
Realising this, and being a natural hair enthusiast for several years, Colincia Rodrigues decided to lend her expertise to other natural hair women and girls, through her business ‘Boss Curlz’.
The primary focus of Boss Curlz is to encourage young women not to give up on the natural hair journey, staying true to the ‘Here to make YOUR hair, OUR problem.
Colincia said that she knows the struggles and hardship of caring for natural hair – like finding the right products and methods of care that work for different hair types.
“I, being a natural hair woman myself, I know how difficult it can be. So I started Boss Curlz to not just sell natural hair stuff, but to also make myself available for people to contact me for tips and advice on how to deal with their natural hair. Based on my experience, what I’ve read and videos I have seen I have become well learned about natural hair care. So I want to be able to give other women inspiration on their hair and encourage them not to give up on the natural hair journey,” the young woman said.
The business started online in January 2021, and persons can order their products through the online platforms (Instagram or Faceook). Just recently (in March), she hosted a physical launch event dubbed ‘Stop. Snack N Shop’, to increase engagement.
“Because a lot of people didn’t know about the business. And there are people who are skeptical about online stores. So I did a launch event to show that we are a legit, authentic store,” Colincia said.
The young woman said that she is extremely passionate about helping those who might not know what to do and how to do it, as it relates to their hair. And since her business started, it has been an enjoyable journey for her.
“I’m getting to know about different people and lending my help to make their troubles easier,” she said.
About SHE-E-O
Colincia describes herself as a woman who grew up being a very peculiar child. She was very shy and antisocial, and never among the popular bunch. But with those she socialised with, she was always the clownish one who made them laugh.
However, as she grew, Colincia started being more expressive and outgoing, as her mother would always push her to excel and do great things.
During her teenage years, she was into sports, and was a sprinter in her school. In addition to that, she was into music for a very long time, and at one point she wanted to be a singer.
“I was hooked on being this big singer, but I lost that passion eventually because at some point I had to grow up and accept that music in Guyana is not a thriving industry,” she shared.
Colincia also had interest in pageantry and was given the opportunity to enter Miss Guyana Talented Teens by Jenel Cox. But lack of confidence caused her to opt out.
Her focus ranged from Accounting to Marketing, to Business Management, all of which will help her in the proper running of her new business.
“My interests have changed so much during the years I can’t even explain to you. But I’m passionate about being the best version of myself and also passionate about my business and seeing it grow and manifest into something extraordinary,” the young entrepreneur said.
