Should I work out on my period?

We all know that excruciating feeling of cramps, back aches, nausea, and somehow like the weight of the world is on our uterus. Oh Eve, why’d you have to eat the fruit? During this harrowing time, we just want to lay in bed, eat junk and seriously cannot take foolishness from anyone, or just plain old grumpy. But should we exercise in such a state?

Definitely.

What should be considered is the intensity of your exercises. According to certified trainer, Joanna Soh, performing light exercises during our periods can actually help relieve some of the symptoms and make us feel better. “Exercising while on your period can increase endorphins, the ‘feel good’ hormone, improve mood, ease cramps, reduce cravings, keep hormones in balance, and this also helps to regulate irregular periods naturally,” explains Soh.

Soh’s advice is to avoid high intensity workouts as this can aggravate menstrual cramps, but rather, do some light cardio and aerobics for ten to thirty minutes, such as walking in the park; yoga, light weights, or simple at-home movements.

Heavy lifters, I am sorry, but easing off the 300lb deadlift would be a wise decision on your period. Even if you try to lift heavy during the first few days in the follicular phase of your cycle, your body would tell you to hold the hell up. Naturally, your strength is not the same as it was a week ago, especially on the first two days of your period. “Due to the changes in our hormones, our joints and tendons are at a higher risk of injuries,” says soh, but if you do attempt to lift a bit heavy, do not lift without a spotter.

Go ahead and get moving during your period. It wouldn’t hurt like cramps.
